    • Iowa City High School has recently been named as one of America's top high schools by Newsweek for 2015 and by The Daily Beast for 2014.  It has also been named as one of the top schools in the country by US News and World Report, Newsweek, and The Washington Post.   
    • City High was identified as an EXEMPLAR SCHOOL for college readiness. 
    • City High's student publication The Little Hawk and website has been named a Pacemaker in 2014, 2015, and 2016, 2017
    • One of the only high schools in the country to receive both awards and the only school in Iowa.  
    • Best Buddies has been named the leading chapter in the country repeatedly over the last decade.

  • City High 2018 Career Caravan for Sophomores

     December 7, 2018

    • Attention 10th graders. Check your FlexiSched and if Mary Peterson, one of our counselors, requested you, you must report to the Little Theater (room 2114) RIGHT NOW to complete your registration for the Career Caravan taking place on Dec 19th.
    • US Army Recruiters will be at City High on Wednesday, Dec 12that 11:30 AM.  Interested students should sign up in the Guidance Office.
    • Senior photos for the yearbook are due December 20th.  They can be emailed to THEREDANDWHITEYB@gmail.comor dropped off to Room 2109.
    • Do you need an official transcript postmarked by January 1, 2019 for a college application?  If yes, then you must stop in the Guidance Office and complete a Transcript Request form no later than the end of the day on Tuesday, December 18th!
    • City High Student Senate is holding a winter clothing drive! We are accepting all gently-used winter clothing items, including hats, gloves, coats, hats, etc. Drop off boxes are at the front desk in the City High library. These clothing donations will be distributed to City Students in need.
    • The City of Iowa City is looking for student volunteers on Saturday, December 8th, to help them with a project they have coming up. This is a fabulous Silver Cord opportunity!   Information can be found on the counter in the Main Office.
    • The Snowball Winter Dance is fast approaching, and will take place Saturday, December 8, 8-11 in the CHS Cafeteria!  Tickets go on sale Friday, $7 in advance, $10 at the door.
    • Friday January 18th we are offering a field trip to the Abraham Lincoln sites in Springfield, Illinois.  The cost of the field trip is $25.00 per student.  This cost will pay for our charter bus.  If you are interested please stop by Mr. Hellwig's room (2312).  Space is limited so act fast!
    • Just a reminder about the Excellence award   Students will nominate teachers and staff that go above and beyond.  Students will be asked to write a letter stating why this teacher or staff member should receive the Excellence  Nomination letters should be sent to Mr. Bacon or turned into the Main Office.

    Check out this amazing fly-through video illustrating the proposed design of the addition and renovation project at City High School! Work is scheduled to begin during the summer of 2019.

  • Canvas Access

    In Fall, 2017, the district launched Canvas as its secondary-level Learning Management System. This platform – which is used by dozens of school districts throughout Iowa, as well as by The University of Iowa and Iowa State University – serves as the online platform for all secondary-level coursework in the Iowa City Schools.

    Iowa City High School has been a standout chapter over a decade and contains all the components needs for an exceptional chapter. Their student leaders, both with and without IDD, are dedicated, forward thinking individuals who work together more like a family than simply a team.

  • 2019-20 Elementary Attendance Areas

    The Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors approved new elementary attendance areas for the 2019-20 school year. The new boundaries were approved during their November 27 board meeting. The updated maps can be found on the District website at the following link:

  • Schools Serving as Election Polling Sites

    We have received multiple inquiries regarding our schools serving as election polling locations. While we understand the concern of allowing our schools to be open to the public throughout the school day, we are required by State Statute 49.24 to make our facilities available for this purpose.

  • District ACT Scores Released

    The Iowa City Community School District is excited to share the District’s ACT data for tested 2018 graduates. We are proud to report that once again the District's average composite ACT score of 24.9 exceeds the state's average, which comes in at 21.8 for 2018.

  • 'Say Something' Reporting Tool

    The Iowa City Community School District has launched the ‘Say Something’ campaign to provide students, staff, and parents an alternative option for reporting bullying incidents, sexual assault or harassment incidents, and school safety concerns. Reports can be submitted by texting @SaySomething to the number 35134 or using your phone’s camera to read the QR code on the posters on display throughout each school. In addition, the link to use this same system via computer is a bookmark on every Chromebook in the District.

  • District Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

    Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) released the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The Iowa City Community School District is proud to announce that 25 District students have been included in this honor. West High leads the state again with 21 students named as 2019 Semifinalists, and City High boasts 4 Semifinalists.

  • John Bacon Welcome to City High School!

    City High is a special place with a rich and distinguished history. Our students are incredible, talented young people. Our families are highly supportive, active, and involved. Our faculty and staff represent true excellence in education. Our alumni share a common bond and continually rally around our beautiful school. Together, we are “The School That Leads!”

    As a proud graduate of City High (1992), I have a deep passion for our school. More than anything else, the experience I had as a student at City High shaped the future direction of my life. It is an honor and a joy to serve as principal.

    At City High, we share a common vision. Our school will be:
