Shimek Elementary is a special place where all children are cared for, feel safe, and where their own unique styles of learning are EMBRACED. Our teachers and staff work hard to INSPIRE our students with engaging instruction, high expectations, and a desire to meet each child where they are in order to help them grow. Our ultimate goal is to promote EXCELLENCE in every child who walks through our doors, helping them to realize and reach their fullest potential — preparing them for the future. • COVID-19 Vaccine Information for Children Ages 12 and Over

Beginning May 13, 2021, children ages 12 and older are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine following the Food and Drug Administration’s authorization of the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use in this younger age group. This is the only COVID-19 vaccine available to children at this time. Through our partnership with Johnson County Public Health (JCPH), we are providing information to families on how eligible children can receive the vaccine. We would also like to provide resources for those who wish to learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine and children.

  • Conditions for Learning Student Survey

The Iowa City Community School District is getting ready to administer an annual school climate and culture survey called Conditions for Learning to students in grades 3-12. This survey administration is required by the state’s plan to meet a federal law called the Every Student Succeeds Act. Our District will conduct the survey between April 5-May 28. All Iowa public school districts will use the Conditions for Learning Survey (Survey) to improve safety, student engagement and the overall learning environment so that all Iowa students have optimum conditions for learning. Our work to improve safety, student engagement and the overall learning environment will have a lasting impact on the future.
