Degrees and Certifications:
At South East Junior High, I teach Literacy 7. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a master's degree from Northern Illinois University. My teaching career began in Illinois. The first school where I started teaching English Language Arts was Freeport High School. It has quite a unique mascot--Pretzels. They are the Freeport Pretzels and to show my school spirit, I proudly wore my black sweatshirt with a giant orange pretzel on the front.
When I moved to another high school to teach Language Arts and Spanish, I switched from a snack food as mascot to Sandwich High School in Sandwich, Illinois. Yes, I thought it was a step up from a snack food to a meal. After five years there, I moved and taught English Language Arts in Sycamore, Illinois. So I moved on to a...tree. Officially, they are the Sycamore Spartans.
Then, my family moved back to my hometown, Dubuque, Iowa. In my heart, I will always be a mustang, having graduated from Hempstead High School in Dubuque. When my husband was hired at ACT, we moved to Coralville after the flood in 2008, and I joined the staff at South East in 2009. So after all my other years of teaching, I now SOAR as a Little Hawk perhaps snacking on pretzels or sandwiches. At times, perching in a sycamore tree as I watch Spartans march by and mustangs gallop below.
