General Information

  • Longfellow Elementary School blends the tradition of a turn-of-the-century building with the modern adaptations needed to accommodate successful 21st century learning. The rich cultural diversity of the neighborhood make it a unique and diverse elementary school within the Iowa City Community School District. At the present, there are over 320 students in attendance.

The educational program here incorporates an emphasis on learning the common core curriculum through experiential learning, basic skills instruction and enrichment opportunities. Included in the program are activities that integrate multicultural experiences. Musical reviews for all grades, an annual art show, multiple after-school learning opportunities, and school-wide service learning projects in various academic and fine arts areas enrich the community. Reading as a leisure time activity, along with a love of literature, is nurtured through cooperative efforts of the librarian, teachers, parents, and students.

The Longfellow staff is committed to continuing school improvement by fostering a team approach to curriculum development and instructional improvement; incorporating the elements of effective school research into day-by-day operations. At Longfellow the academic achievement of students is a top priority. The staff is committed to building high self-esteem in each child and fostering positive, cooperative attitudes and focusing on the “whole” child.
