Principal's Message

  • Kathy Jenkins Dear Lucas Elementary family,

It is with great anticipation and humility that I write this letter of introduction to you as the new principal of Lucas Elementary School for the 2018–19 school year. I am honored to have been selected to serve and look forward to meeting each of you.

On a personal note, I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and come from a very large family. On a professional note, I am beginning my eighteenth year as an educator, and this will be my fifth year as a principal. I spent approximately eight years as an assistant principal, and prior to that, I was an early childhood educator for five years.

I am a graduate of Depaul University in Chicago, Illinois. I completed my bachelor’s degree in communications in 2000, dual master degrees in elementary education/early childhood in 2005, and my doctoral degree in Educational Leadership in 2013.

I am so excited to join the Lucas team and to get the year started. See you soon!

    Sincerely,

    Kathy Jenkins, Ed.D.

  • Conditions for Learning Student Survey

The Iowa City Community School District is getting ready to administer an annual school climate and culture survey called Conditions for Learning to students in grades 3-12. This survey administration is required by the state’s plan to meet a federal law called the Every Student Succeeds Act. Our District will conduct the survey between April 5-May 28. All Iowa public school districts will use the Conditions for Learning Survey (Survey) to improve safety, student engagement and the overall learning environment so that all Iowa students have optimum conditions for learning. Our work to improve safety, student engagement and the overall learning environment will have a lasting impact on the future.

  • School Calendar Update and Enrollment Deadline Reminder

The Board discussed the District’s upcoming transition to a 100% on-site learning model during a special Board Meeting on February 2, 2021. In order to better prepare for this transition, it was decided that Friday, February 12, 2021, will be a ‘no school’ day for students. Staff will utilize this day to prepare to welcome students back to 100% on-site learning on Monday, February 15, 2021. This includes aligning student services, building staffing plans, equipping buildings with necessary furniture, reviewing new health and safety protocols, and conducting building cleaning. The ‘no school’ day applies to both on-site and online students and will not impact the last day of the school year this June.

  • Learning Model Update (1/29/21)

On January 29, 2021, a bill was signed by the Governor requiring school districts to provide parents an option to send students to school five days a week. Due to this change in state law, the District will offer a 100% on-site option and a 100% online option (ICCSD PK-12 Online Learning Program). Effective February 15, 2021, the District will no longer offer the hybrid option.
