21st Century Community Learning Centers

  • The Iowa City School District benefits greatly by having 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) during the schools year and summer at Kirkwood, Twain, Alexander, and Hills Elementary. In an extension of the school day, these 21st CCLC programs provide academic and enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children.  The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers parent involvement opportunities and other educational services to the families of participating children.

The 21st CCLC Programs are blended with the Elementary Before and After School Programs (BASP) in the buildings we serve. 21st CCLC programs hire certified teachers and use top of the line research based materials – this combination continues to show positive outcomes.  Our programs provide a range of high quality services to support student learning and development, including tutoring and mentoring, homework help, academic enrichment (such as hands-on science and technology programs), community service opportunities, as well as music, arts, sports, and cultural activities.  The programs have monthly themes that tie the academics and enrichment to a variety of field trips taken around the state.  At the same time, centers help working parents by providing a safe and structured environment for students.

Our goal is to increase the number of students we serve each year, during the school year and summer, as the need for our program continues to rise. The grant cannot support the high demand for our programs, so as funds become harder to obtain we hope to continue to raise money for our summer program and sustainability into the future.

The success of our programs would not be possible without our community partners:
