Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Cory Connell
I am an alumni of City High; I graduated in the year 2000. I was born and raised on the east side of Iowa City. In high school, I was on the wrestling team where I was a State Champion, 3x State Placewinner, and All-American.
After high school, I went to the University of Iowa where I started my education degree and wrestled for the Hawkeyes. I went there for a couple years before transferring to Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. At Wartburg, I got my degree in Physical Education and wrestled for the Knights. In wrestling, I was a conference Champion, All-American, and National Runner-up on a National Championship Team.
While finishing up my degree, I was a volunteer coach at Waverly-Shell Rock High School for one year before getting my first teaching and coaching position at Eddyville-Blakesburg High School. I was at Eddyville-Blakesburg for six years, where I taught K-8 PE and was the head wrestling coach. I was voted Coach of the Year in 2010, coaching the Rockets to a State Runner-up Finish.
In 2012, I got the opportunity of a lifetime to come back to my alma mater, City High, to teach and coach. At City High, I teach Performance PE & PE, and I am the Head Wrestling Coach. In 2018 I was voted District Coach of the Year, Conference Coach of the year and our team won the District, Regional Dual Championships, MVC Conference Tournament and Dual Chamionsips. We also finished 8th as a team at the Traditional State and Dual State Tournaments.
I am married to Michelle Connell, who is a physical thearapist at the University of Iowa Hospitals, and we have a son Cole and a daughter Cara who both go to Shimek Elementary.
