Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Diana Hawley
My Role: This year I will be teaching 2nd, 5th and 6th grade music at Lemme, and Kindergarten and 2nd grade music at Lincoln. I also work with K-12 teachers as an Instructional Strategiest in Innovation at Lincoln, Longfellow, Horn, Southeast JH and City High. Outside of my work in the Iowa City schools, I present workshops and teach graduate courses for praticing music teachers. Learn more about that here. I am feeling energized, eager for new challenges and more called than ever to facilitate critical thinking in the classroom!
Education & Family: I hold a BA in Music and Sociology/Anthropology from St. Olaf College and an MA in Education from the University of St. Thomas. Before moving to Iowa City in 2009, I taught in St. Paul, MN and at International School Bangkok in Thailand. This summer I traveled to St. Louis, Philadelphia and Minneapolis to train teachers in the Orff Approach to music teaching and learning (http://aosa.org/about/what-is-orff-schulwerk/). A few years ago I co-edited and authored a book for music educators called Artful-Playful-Mindful in Action: Orff-Schulwerk Classroom Projects for a New Generation of Learners. My two boys, Kaj (5th grade) and Leif (3rd grade) attend Lemme Elementary. I am very thankful I get to teach at their school!

It’s important to note that when [students] are expressing their own musical ideas, they are thinking and behaving in ways that relate not only to learning about music, but also to learning about anything. - Jane Frazee
