About Any Given Child

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., is designed to assist communities in working strategically to align the existing resources of the school district, the local arts community, and the Kennedy Center to provide an equitable arts education for all students in grades K-8.

In 2012, Iowa City was selected as the eighth Any Given Child site joining other cities including Portland, Austin, Sacramento, Tulsa, Springfield, Las Vegas, and Sarasota. Currently, twenty-seven cities have been selected as Any Given Child sites

From September 2012 to May 2013, a local Any Given Child team composed of school district administrators, arts organizations, artists, and community leaders met, and with the Kennedy Center’s guidance, completed an audit of arts activities and resources at the school district, surveying arts organization and artists, and analyzing the data. This survey revealed that while Iowa City is rich in arts resources, arts opportunities in the school district vary depending on what school a student attends or what grade a student is in. Additionally, exposure and participation to the arts varies by arts discipline. While K-8 students have regular classes in music and visual arts, exposure and experience with dance and theatre are limited.

The team developed a long-range plan for Iowa City to create a more balanced and equitable arts education for every child in the district. The Any Given Child Advisory Committee continues to provide guidance to support a rich, enlightening arts education program for students in grades K-8.

Current Any Given Child programs are listed on our Programs page. Any Given Child-Iowa City ensures equal access in its programming by providing each grade-level program to all students in that grade across the district. In addition, AGC regularly reaches out to the ICCSD’s Home School Assistance Program to provide arts programming for home-schooled students within the district. The AGC Advisory Committee intends that these programs will continue into upcoming school years, subject to regular evaluation and feedback from principals, classroom teachers, and art, music, and physical education teachers. Collaborating with our vibrant arts community, Any Given Child-Iowa City will also continue to add art experiences to the school days for the district’s K-8 students. The Advisory Committee is particularly interested in opportunities that address the previously identified dance and theatre gaps, as well as opportunities that will provide experience with art and technology integration.
