About the Penn Library

  • Mission: Students read for fun, work collaboratively, and use an inquiry process to find, evaluate and use information effectively.
    Library curriculum
The Iowa City Community Schools Library Curriculum balances literature and information skills instruction. At Penn, classes receive a weekly lesson with the teacher librarian. In addition, the teacher librarian collaborates with classroom teachers to provide instruction that is flexibly scheduled. Keyboarding instruction is provided for 3rd grade students.

    Books and other materials
The library has quality fiction, nonfiction, and reference books, magazines, local newspapers, DVDs, videotapes, novel units, leveled books, books on CD, big books, and kits that support teaching and learning for elementary students.
There are four computer catalog workstations for students and staff. The computer lab has 34 workstations for student and classroom use and a laptop cart is available for checkout to classrooms.
