West High School Concert Bands form the core of our Band program at West. In our concert bands, students have opportunities to work as a group to perform pieces that span the ages. WHS band students have frequently been selected and performed in All-State, SEIBA Honor Band and various other Honor Bands in Iowa. At West, we have four levels of Concert Bands:
Non-Audition Bands * Freshman Band - Incoming 9th graders begin to learn about the band program at West High in our Freshman Band. All ninth-grade band students are initially enrolled in Freshmen band.
* Varsity Band - Varsity Band is our non-audition band for 10th -12th grade students. Sophomore to Senior students wishing to continue band in a non-audition environment will find a wonderful atmosphere in Varsity Band.
Audition Bands * Symphonic Band - Symphonic Band is one of West High's advanced bands and offers a great chance for our student musicians to grow. Auditions are held around April/May of the previous school year and students from 9th-12th grade are welcome to audition. Incoming freshmen audition at NWJH in April/May of their 8th grade year.
* Wind Ensemble - Wind Ensemble is West High's most advanced band and is a venue to showcase our students' musical excellence. Wind Ensemble has a limited number of students on each instrument part. Auditions are held around April/May of the previous school year and students from 9th-12th grade are welcome to audition. Incoming freshmen audition at NWJH in April/May of their 8th grade year.
