  • When people think about our schools, words like traditional and established come to mind, but also responsive, innovative, creative, and progressive. For over one hundred years, the Iowa City Community School District has been the instructional leader in eastern Iowa, across the state, and throughout the nation.

Trimester System

  • ICCSD Online uses a trimester system. A trimester consists of approximately 57-60 classes, or 12 weeks of school. Students earn high school credits for successfully completing work during a trimester. Students will earn 5 credits for successfully completing a trimester class. Students must earn 309 credits to qualify for a diploma. The graduation requirements are outlined here:

    1. A maximum of 15 credits of a combination of journalism, speech, and communication studies can be applied to fulfill the 60 credits of required English courses.
    2. The social studies requirement includes one year of American Studies, one year of World History, two trimesters of Government, and one trimester of Economics.
    3. The physical education requirement requires the student to be registered in PE for one trimester of each year of attendance. Seniors who participate in an athletic sport during the school year may request a waiver from participating in a physical education class. The requirement may also be waived for those students with a doctor’s medical excuse filed in the Health Office. This waiver must be filed annually.
    4. Students must be registered in health for one trimester unless a parent waiver request is approved.

College Entrance Requirements

  • Our students have the opportunity to build their own educational plans through the use of individual learning plans, which help our students and parents select appropriate courses to support the exploration of various career opportunities. Students are strongly urged to work closely with their school counselor regarding college entrance requirements and completing their four year plan.
