Welcome to Music!

About Music Class:

How often do we have music?

Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade have music class three times a week for 27 minutes at a time.

4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade have music class two times a week for 27 minutes at a time.

What will we do in music class?

We will sing, move, play instruments, and create our own music!  We use music, poetry, art, and dance from all over the world and many musical cultures.  Music is a great way to learn about other cultures as well as your own!  Music also helps us learn to listen to each other, empathize with others and respect their musical contributions, and work as a team!  Some of the instruments we play include hand drums, mallet instruments such as xylophones, recorders, and baritone ukuleles.

What if I'm not a good singer?

Singing is just like reading or playing sports--it is something we learn to do through practice.  I am not here to decide who has a "good" or "bad" voice, my job is to help you find your best voice and feel comfortable singing!

Will we have performances?

I will communicate with families about performance formats, dates, and times as they approach.  Every student will have the opportunity to share what they are learning in music class with their family in some format every year.

What about band and orchestra?

5th and 6th graders have the opportunity to learn an instrument and play with the band or the orchestra.  The band and orchestra teachers will communicate with you about those programs.  I hope you try it out!

What instruments do you play?

I love to learn about all kinds of instruments!  I started taking piano lessons in kindergarten, then started viola in 4th grade, then trombone in 5th grade, then guitar in 6th grade!  In college, my primary instrument was viola.  These days I play mostly fiddle and electric guitar.  I have also sung in choirs all my life, starting with the Iowa City Girls Choir in 4th grade!  I now sing with Chamber Singers of Iowa City and play guitar in a rock band.

What is your favorite kind of music?

I honestly love all kinds of music.  Some of my favorite genres are punk rock, hip-hop, folk, Afrobeat, and Motown.  Please share your favorite music with me!  I would love to hear what you are listening and incorporate it into our music class!

Why did you become a music teacher?

I decided I wanted to be an elementary school music teacher when I was in about 5th grade, and I have never changed my mind!  I think I have the best job in the world because I get to know really amazing young people and create art with them.  I believe that making music together builds strong communities and healthy, empowered people!  I want every student to leave here feeling confident being an active participant in music in a way that adds value to their life, whatever that is.

Do you have any pets?

I have a toy labradoodle named Iggy Pup, who is my puppy sidekick!  He is working hard training to be a therapy dog.  When he finishes his training, he and I will go visit people in the hospital and nursing homes to keep them company and make them happy!

Who is in your family?

I have a big sister, Nora, who lives in Lone Tree, and my parents live in Iowa City.

What do you like besides music?

I love dinosaurs, Harry Potter, crafts, and camping.
