Health and Personal Development lessons are taught at the elementary and secondary levels in our District.

Instructional Time & Curriculum

Elementary
Instruction occurs during content time of science, social studies, physical education, and/or guidance. Published programs have been adopted and designated at certain grade levels. Instructors of the content may be classroom teachers, counselors, and/or physical education teachers (or a combination of instructors).

Kindergarten - 3rd Grade Curriculum:

Personal Safety: General safety rules with a focus on gun safety
Body Anatomy: Anatomically correct names for body parts and corresponding diagrams
Body Autonomy: Consent and communicating own and respecting others personal boundaries
Risk Reduction: Speaking up and communicating unsafe situations to adults

4th Grade Curriculum:

Secondary

Instructional Time & Curriculum

Secondary Health Curriculum Overview
At the secondary level, students have access to age-appropriate, research-based courses in health and personal development. Instruction is designed to support student growth in physical, emotional, mental, and social health, while also providing accurate information to help them make informed decisions.

Middle School:

6th Grade: One quarter of health education.
7th or 8th Grade: One quarter of personal development.
Portions of required content may also be integrated into physical education and family and consumer sciences courses.

High School:

Comprehensive health and development courses are offered, with opportunities for reinforcement across disciplines.
Courses available: Health, Personal Wellness & Fitness, and Current & Critical Issues
CPR is taught in all HS health courses.

Gender roles, stereotypes, and identity (Personal Development only)
The Reproductive System (Grades 7–12)
Healthy vs. unhealthy relationships (Grades 6 - 8)
