Our mission is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to make the critical health choices they will face throughout their lives and enable them to establish lifelong healthy behaviors.
Health and Personal Development lessons are taught at the elementary and secondary levels in our District.
Curriculum
Instructional Time Guidelines
Elementary
Instruction occurs during content time of science, social studies, physical education, and/or guidance. Published programs have been adopted and designated at certain grade levels. Instructors of the content may be classroom teachers, counselors, and/or physical education teachers (or a combination of instructors).
Secondary
At the secondary level, students attend age-appropriate health and development classes. One trimester of personal development is required in grades 7 and 8 and one trimester of health is required in grade 9. Portions of the required content may be taught in Physical Education and Family and Consumer Science classes.
Health Instruction
Kindergarten
Health instruction gives attention to experiences relating to life skills and human growth and development.
Grades 1-8
Health instruction includes personal health; food and nutrition; environmental health; safety and survival skills; consumer health; family life; substance abuse and non-use, encompassing the effects of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and poison on the human body; human sexuality, self-esteem, stress management, and interpersonal relationships; emotional and social health; health resources; and prevention and control of disease, and the characteristics of communicable diseases, including acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
Grade 9-12
Health instruction includes personal health; food and nutrition; environmental health; safety and survival skills; consumer health; family life; human growth and development; substance abuse and non-use; emotional and social health; health resources; and prevention and control of disease, including sexually transmitted diseases and acquired immune deficiency syndrome, current crucial health issues, human sexuality, self-esteem, stress management, and interpersonal relationships.
