Welcome to Mathematics

K-5 mathematics develops a strong foundation in mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals, allowing students to build a strong understanding of number relationships and mathematical reasoning. Critical skills, understandings, and mathematical practices—such as problem-solving, mental computation, estimation, and real-world application—are integrated across the elementary experiences as students build upon their previous knowledge and background through active learning experiences. 

Our K-5 students learn math by doing math, contributing to them becoming confident and competent mathematicians! 

Curricular Materials: 
ICCSD utilizes the problem-based material, Illustrative Mathematics - IM v.360 in all K-5 classrooms. IM v.360 promotes a collaborative model that fosters deeper mathematical understanding through rich mathematical tasks, inviting students to talk and write about math, listen to peers, justify their thinking, and critique the reasoning of others. Happy Numbers, an adaptive digital program, is used by students to reinforce mathematical concepts and skills at an individualized pace. 

 

Our district uses Illustrative Mathematics (IM) for the 6th-8th grade math curriculum, a problem-based program designed to build deep understanding and strong mathematical reasoning skills. Through Illustrative Mathematics, students engage in rigorous, standards-aligned lessons.  This curriculum encourages students to think critically, explore concepts through discussion, and apply problem-solving strategies in real-world contexts.

We are committed to providing a strong foundation in mathematics while offering pathways for students to challenge themselves and earn college credit. Below is an overview of the required high school math courses and the opportunities available for advanced study.

Required Math Courses

To meet graduation requirements, all students must complete the following core math courses:

• Algebra 1 – Develops fundamental algebraic concepts, including equations, inequalities, functions, and graphing.
• Geometry or Geometry & Construction – Focuses on geometric reasoning, proof, and spatial thinking, with an applied, hands-on approach available in the Geometry & Construction course.
• Algebra 2 / Modern Algebra 2 – Expands on algebraic concepts, including quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions, preparing students for higher-level math.

Honors Options: Honors-level courses are available for students seeking a more rigorous challenge in Geometry, Algebra 2, and beyond.

Dual Credit & College Credit Opportunities

Students can also take advantage of our dual enrollment opportunities to earn both high school and college credit for free through Kirkwood Community College  and University of Iowa.

Acceleration Guidelines for Students in K-6 Mathematics

The Iowa City Community School District provides a robust mathematics curriculum for all students in grades K- 5 with opportunities for enrichment and extension rather than acceleration for most students. Grade acceleration in math impacts the student’s future math instruction in all subsequent grades and is not an action to be taken lightly. The profile of a strong acceleration candidate would include the following characteristics:

• Performance and scores that are consistently well above the class average on daily tasks and assessments
• Interest in and successful completion of classroom enrichment/extension opportunities
• Social and emotional maturity
• Exemplary work and study habits
• Strong interest and enthusiasm for math 
• The motivation and perseverance to solve challenging tasks
• The ability to clearly explain their mathematical reasoning and show how they determined an answer
• An openness to learning other perspectives and strategies 

Families and teachers may nominate K-4 students for acceleration between April 1–30 by contacting their school administrator. Supporting data will first be reviewed at the building level and then, if warranted, at the district level. The acceleration process will be completed by the end of the school year to ensure appropriate placement for the following year.

Students completing 5th grade may enroll in an accelerated math course upon transitioning to middle school. Condensed 6/7 Grade Math, a rigorous course covering 6th-grade and part of 7th-grade content, is designed for students with strong mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills.

Placement decisions will be based on multiple factors, including classroom performance, team recommendations, and assessment results. Families will receive placement recommendations during Spring 5th grade conferences.
