What do students do?

At the transition level, students are becoming an adult member of their households. Domestic instruction is activity-based and includes the following:

• Healthy food choices
• Cooking — meal planning, shopping and food preparation
• Personal care and grooming
• Cleaning and organizing
• Money use and budgeting

Students spend half or more of each day in the community at the transition level. A variety of environments in the community will be used for instruction and practice of domestic, vocational and rec/leisure skills.  Mobility is a big part of every community experience with daily practice on street-crossing and using public transportation.

At the transition level students become more involved in work. One-third of each week is spent on work-based activities in the community. Work skills, attitudes and behaviors are developed through job coaching. Some experiences will be individual and others in enclaves (small groups). Exploration of work environments and tasks are strongly recommended. The information gained is a valuable part of transition planning.

After high school, in this transition level, students have more recreation/leisure time. Increasing the repertoire of activities a student accesses is important, as well as the exposure to options within our community. 

Activities include:

• Fitness workouts
• Games and hobbies
• Restaurant use
• Library and museum use
• Utilizing technology

Fit facility directly across the street from Eastdale has been providing complimentary use of their cardio and fitness equipment during school hours, with staff supervision.  Students are assisted by TSC staff to get a good individual workout, learn to use the equipment, change in the locker room and manage their time. 

Students are learning to use the fitness rooms at local recreation centers as an alternate to a fitness membership.  They are learning cardio, strength and stretching activities with the guidance of a job coach.  In addition to fitness, students are using this time to learn basic gym etiquette. 

TSC has provided support to students interested in trying a group fitness class.  These include Zumba Gold, Gentle Yoga, Cardio Kick, Aquatics and Bootcamp.
