A LITTLE NOTE…

My name is Alyssa Cabrera. This is my 9th year teaching 1st grade. I grew up in Iowa City, Go Little Hawks! My daughter, Lidia, will be in 1st grade and my oldest, Bianca, will be a 4th grader at Shimek. I look forward to getting to know more about your family this year!

HOMEWORK

Your kiddo will be ‘ON’ all day at school and will be learning all day! Yes, I will be sending homework home but… I am a firm believer that homework does not make or break education. Homework in my room is more of a way to have family conversations about what we are learning in school all day long. If your family can only get homework done on Tuesday evenings for half an hour, do what you can in that half an hour.

My only steadfast request is that you READ with your kiddos every day. It can be a grocery list, a recipe, the signs on a door… Just READ and show your kiddos where you use knowledge (reading, math, science, social studies) throughout your daily routines!

SNACK TIME

We work hard in 1st grade and a snack is great for continued brain power! You will soon receive a sign-up genius to pick a week (or 2 or 3) to send in fresh, healthy snacks.

We always appreciate any non-perishable items that can be stored in our cupboards for a backup on weeks we do not receive fresh food snacks.

Please review our wellness policy on the district website. Here is a list of ideas from the policy:

-fresh fruit   -dried fruit, fruit cups, applesauce

-fresh vegetables   -dips and spreads

-string cheese   -yogurt   -granola bars

-multi-grain/vegetable chips   -rice cakes

-crackers   -popcorn  -pretzels
