Performance Music Information
The District's Performance Music Department provides an opportunity for all students to develop an understanding of music at its highest level through experiences with vocal and instrumental performance, and through listening and composition appropriate to each level. Music provides an opportunity for self expression, while development of musical talent develops performance discrimination for enjoyment in later life. The primary objective for studying music is to develop musicianship and musical sensitivity, a positive learning attitude, and a positive self-concept.
Music training in this district provides the students with skills to be a consumer, performer or composer of music and helps them become aware of the inter-relatedness of the arts and other existing disciplines. This prepares students to be aware of and respect the value of the world's musical heritage, and to feel comfortable with music in the various settings with respect to each individual's unique aspirations and values.
Numerous large performance groups and many smaller ensembles are offered. These groups perform in school and for community events. These groups have attained national recognition for their excellence. The District's musicians consistently outnumber any other school representation in the Iowa High School Music Association All-State Music Festival. The junior high bands are consistently Division 1 or 1+ yearly.
Many students are members of community performing groups, including various church vocal and instrumental groups, the Preucil School of Music, and the Iowa City Community Band. After graduation from high school, they continue to enjoy performing with college and university groups, the Sweet Adelines, Chamber Singers of Iowa City, the Iowa City Community Orchestra, the Old Capitol Chorus and the Iowa City Community Band.
The Iowa City Music Auxiliary is the prime parent support group for the District's Performance Department. This group provides financial support to all groups to help maintain a high standard of excellence.
