General Information

  • Welcome to Ernest Horn Elementary! Horn is located in University Heights on the west side of Iowa City. This year’s enrollment is approximately 400 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Horn has a diverse community, with students from 30 different countries speaking 28 languages. All classes are straight grade; K-5 classrooms are self-contained while 6th grade rotates for science, social studies, and writing. In addition, the building has two special education classrooms for behavior-focused students, a resource teacher, an ELL Program, and an Instructional Coach.

Our staff strives to provide comprehensive educational programs enabling students to achieve academic competence and become lifelong learners. Students are provided instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as music, art, health, P.E., and media where technology is continually integrated. Horn’s active PTO provides valuable funding and support for many authentic educational field trips including School of the Wild, Hancher performances, and area nature centers connecting curriculum in and out of the classroom.

We believe in the importance of student involvement in extracurricular activities that improve our students’ education and well-being. Students are encouraged to participate in Dance Marathon, Jump Rope for Heart, Coins for Caps, International Night, Fine Arts Night, Science Fair, Homework Club, and Track Club. Please stop by and see all the wonderful things happening at Horn! Go Hornets!
