General Information

  • When you walk through the doors of Mark Twain Elementary, you enter a place where all children, families, staff, and learning are valued at the highest level. Every child, every adult, and every minute is devoted to building an inclusive, challenging, and responsive environment for preschool through sixth-grade students. Learners are provided with opportunities they need to inquire, and skills and strategies they need to find the answers.

The rigorous academic program at Mark Twain Elementary follows the Iowa Core Curriculum in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Professional Learning Teams collaborate to create differentiated lessons that require high levels of critical thinking and reasoning accompanied with rich language instruction. Our teachers are experienced and passionate professionals who are committed to helping all students reach their full potential.

Mark Twain Elementary School has a strong tradition of supportive, hard-working parents who are highly respected partners with the school. Parents participate in conferences, PTO, classroom engagements, Family Nights, daily reading, and other school activities. Mark Twain also has nurtured community partnerships with Kirkwood Community College and The University of Iowa College of Education. Churches and local organizations support our Backpack program and popular Family Nights.

As you leave Mark Twain Elementary, you will realize that “We are a respectful, responsible, caring community” is not just our motto, but our reality.
