General Information

  • West High opened its doors in 1968 to a growing Iowa City west side community. Today, reflecting the continued growth in the west side communities, more than 1900 students attend West High. The west side community prides itself in both the consistent high achievement of our students and the exemplary quality of our staff.

West High is recognized at the local, state, and national levels as a leader in the quality of education provided for students. West students annually lead the state in ACT results, National AP Scholars, and National Merit Scholars. A culture of excellence at all levels pervades the school community with a continued focus on reaching success for all students.

West High maintains very strong working relationships with the communities of Iowa City, University Heights, Hills, North Liberty, and Coralville. The diversity of the student body further strengthens the enriched education provided for all students. The strong support received from all corners of the west side community through parents, businesses, and patrons provides the necessary resources and spirit of collaboration for students to excel.

Our students have a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities encompassing music, speech and debate, theater, athletics and a full range of clubs and organizations. Over two-thirds of our students choose to participate in extracurricular activities while in high school. Since 1992 West High athletic teams have won 50 state championships.

Niche, a national school ranking system based on quality of student performance named West High as the best public high school in the Iowa. This prestigious honor reflects the high quality work of our faculty and students, combined with strong parent support. I am proud to be a part of such a student-centered school community.
