Orff Club is a music group offered to any Longfellow 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. The focus is on making music with the barred instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels) along with other un-pitched percussion instruments such as drums and shekeres. Sometimes singing and recorder playing is also incorporated. Students that opt to be in Orff Club will participate in weekly rehearsals during the spring months, preparing to perform at a fun community event called “Music of the Village.” Music of the Village includes performances by several elementary school Orff clubs from the Iowa City area and surrounding communities. Longfellow Orff Club also performs occasionally at school functions, including the last day of school assembly.
