The Iowa City Community School District’s new PK-12 Online Learning Program (ICCSD Online) is an exciting learning opportunity available to all students for the 2020 - 2021 school year. As the community and the nation respond to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, ICCSD Online provides parents a high-quality, at-home alternative to the District’s traditional classroom setting. Designed by District teachers and administrators, the program provides students the ability to engage in rigorous coursework offered through an online environment. As a District, we recognize the significant health and safety concerns still facing our community. ICCSD Online provides parents the ability to choose the academic setting that is best for their student without having to sacrifice the traditional benefits of working directly with teachers and classmates.
Individualized learning is a key component of ICCSD Online. As such, the daily and weekly workload will vary depending upon the student’s grade level and course selection. However, the general ICCSD Online framework is designed to offer a workload similar to a typical in-person school day. The individualized approach is further highlighted by the research-based combination of synchronous (live online) and asynchronous work. Students are expected to log in to the platform each day but can do so on their schedule, and most students (with the exception of those taking Edgenuity courses) should expect to have some synchronous (live online) activities each day. Special care has been taken to ensure that courses are scheduled so that students will not have overlapping synchronous activities scheduled.
While offered in an online environment, ICCSD Online provides for social interaction with teachers and peers. Students enrolled in elementary courses will have a teacher and classmates, along with regular class meetings. Secondary students will also be taught in a classroom-style environment with other District students for all courses except those offered through Edgenuity.
ICCSD Online was developed using the same goals and guiding principles as in the District’s brick and mortar buildings. The program follows the same calendar as all other schools in the Iowa City Community School District. Elementary (PK-6) students will be enrolled in their grade level courses, which will include all specials areas, and will follow a set daily schedule. Secondary (7-12) students enroll in at least 5 courses (4 for seniors, with approval) to be considered full-time and eligible for co-curricular activities. Junior and high school students will follow a schedule that sets reasonable expectations for synchronous (live online) and asynchronous coursework during the week. PK-12 schedules can be found here. This standard yet flexible scheduling reinforces the high-quality nature of ICCSD Online as an option for families who would prefer choosing a consistent, online experience for the 2020-2021 school year.
