The focus of our club is on volunteering in the community. The members are all American Red Cross volunteers. The volunteer work includes organizing blood drives, installing smoke alarms in disadvantaged communities, and volunteering at the VA Hospital in Iowa City.

G! World is a mentoring group created for girls of color ages 12-18 who are looking to be a part of a sisterhood, connect with people who look like them, and also girls that may self-identify as victims of crime (bullying, etc).

We have weekly activities that build self-confidence, strong friendships, and teach how to set and achieve goals.  We go on field trips one a month to different fun places in the community, and have two all girls conferences a year.

The Grapevine, formerly Favonius, is West High’s student-produced, literary magazine that showcases students’ creative writing and visual art skills. Each publication is comprised of written works such as poetry, short stories, and shorter prose pieces. Original drawings, artworks, photographs fill the pages as well. The club itself meets weekly to discuss student submissions with the intent of putting together a publication.

TSA Cyber Security (Technology Student Association)

The Technology Student Association (TSA) is a national organization of students engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

TSA high school competitions are categorized by careers in Architecture and Construction Technology, Communications Technology, Computer Science and Information Technology, Leadership, Manufacturing and Transportation Technology, STEM (General), STEM and the Arts, and Technology and Research.

TSA competitions are offered in a traditional format in the classroom and virtually. TSA chapters take the study of STEM beyond the classroom and give students the chance to pursue academic challenges among friends with similar goals and interests.

Together, TSA chapter members work on competitive events, learn and apply leadership skills, and may attend conferences at the state, regional, and national levels.

Here at West High, we have a TSA group that works in Cyber OPS and another group that focuses primarily on Engineering through the TSA TEAMS Competition.

JETS students compete every year in the national TEAMS competition sponsored by the Technology Student Association.

The Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) is an annual competition for middle and high school students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering.  
 
During this one-day competition, students apply math and science knowledge in practical, creative ways to solve real-world engineering challenges.  This year the competition will be held in March, right before spring break.  Contact Mr. Audia if you are interested in joining this club.
