We Love Coralville Central!
Coralville Central was built in 1948 and opened in the fall of 1949 after the residents of Coralville passed two bond issues totaling $108,000 to finance the new school. The Coralville School prior to this is now the old school on 5th Street! Past principals include James Curtin, Principal Baughman, Stanley Bishop, Mike O’Leary and Barb Mueller. Andy Gahan has been the principal since 2014.
Coralville Central’s location is perfect. We are located north of the Coralville strip (2nd Street) by two blocks and nestled in a quaint neighborhood. The front courtyard is filled with flowers and flowering bushes, an exposed pebble sidewalk, and picnic tables. We are within walking distance to grocery stores, post offices, and Coralville’s public library.
Our playground is an area of grass and greenery. Coralville children’s sports teams often practice on our soccer fields and on our baseball diamond and basketball courts. We have beautiful new playground equipment paid for by our generous PTO. We have a Coralville Central Arboretum, started by former principal, Mike O’Leary. He was instrumental in planting over 68 different trees on our school grounds, many of which were planted for teachers “teaching anniversaries.” Grabbing a tree guide from the front door of our school and looking at all of the different trees is a great way to spend a family afternoon.
The school itself, while an older building in our district, is warm and inviting to students, families, and substitute teachers. A large renovation project was completed in 2016, including accessibility renovations, masonry tuck-pointing, geothermal HVAC replacement, new windows and roofing. It has three levels, with almost 450 students. Our classrooms are straight graded, meaning we do not have combined grade levels. Our vivarium, or indoor nature enclosure, houses turtles, hermit crabs, fish, and is a definite highlight of our school’s entryway. We have an “old gym” and a “new gym” with the old gym acting as a cafeteria and the home to our Before and After School Program, Central Cares. PE classes and most assemblies happen in our new gym. Our school has a library with a computer lab. In addition to PE and Library, children attend Music and Art classes weekly. Other activities include Band and Orchestra, Student Safety Patrol, Student Council, and Cougar Chorale. Students at Coralville Central are expected to follow PBIS (Positive Behavior Support) expectations, which are taught at the beginning of the year and revisited throughout. “Reach for the stars! Be the best you can be!” is our school motto.
Our principal, Andy Gahan, and secretary Jamie Henze, create an inviting and welcoming School Office. Our teachers are the best of the best as they foster a positive learning environment and create friendly and fun classrooms. Grade levels meet in weekly PLC (professional learning communities) to ensure they are meeting the needs of all students. Collaboration happens easily and freely.
We asked sixth graders to write about our school. Here are what a few of them said:
“Our school has teachers that are kind, helpful, caring. We have students who represent their school well. We also have a good library with lots of exciting and great books.”
“This school gives you a good education but it is also a fun place to be. The teachers are nice. But the best thing is that it’s really big!”
“This school has an amazing and friendly staff. Every year we raise money to improve our school by getting more teachers to help, more supplies, and a better playground. Our school is friendly on the outside and on the inside.”
Please feel free to come by and visit our school.
