There is a lot of important work underway across our district, and we want to continue keeping you informed about the conversations, planning, and decisions taking place. Following last night’s Board meeting, we are sharing updates on several areas, including our financial progress, elementary classroom resources, capital planning, and boundary and enrollment analysis.

The Iowa City Community School District will once again offer influenza (flu) vaccine clinics in our schools this year. This service will be provided through a partnership with Walgreens Pharmacy.

If your child qualified for free or reduced-price meals last school year, we want to remind you that the grace period for continuing those benefits is ending soon.

Free or reduced-price meal eligibility from the previous school year continues for the first 30 days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. If you have not submitted a new application for this school year, your child’s current eligibility will expire on October 6, 2026.

Following our recent board meeting and work sessions, we want to share a few important updates on the work happening across our district. We know these conversations matter to our entire school community. We remain committed to sharing information openly, providing opportunities for community input, and keeping students at the center of the decisions ahead.

It is with profound sadness that we share information regarding the tragic accident that occurred during the Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area.

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) have announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. We are proud to announce that we have 30 Semifinalists from our District, with 8 from City High, 6 from Liberty High, and 16 from West High.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the September 8, 2026, Board meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

The September 15 schedule will be:

• Education Committee Meeting: 4:30-5:45 p.m.
• Special Board Meeting to appoint a new Board member: 6:00 p.m.
• Regular Board Meeting: Immediately following the Special Meeting
• Work Session: Immediately following the Board Meeting

Now that the school year is underway, we want to take a moment to share information about the safety measures we have in place across our District. Please know that the safety of our students and staff is, and always will be, our highest priority.

Our district takes this responsibility very seriously. We continually review, strengthen, and expand our safety protocols to create the most secure learning environment possible. While not all details can be shared for security reasons, we want to provide an overview of the measures we have in place.

Following Tuesday night's Board Meeting, we wanted to share updates on several important areas of work happening across our district. We have important work ahead of us this year, and we are committed to keeping our families, staff, and community informed and involved along the way. The Iowa City Community School District Board of Education received Director Jayne Finch’s resignation on Friday, August 21. We thank Director Finch for the time and energy she has devoted to our district and community during her five years of service on the Board. The Board will discuss how to fill this vacancy at our August 25 regular meeting.
