Process Recommendations:

1. Receive name suggestions from the community

2. Select a screening committee (Appointment by Superintendent or designee and Board President)

  • School volunteer
  • District administrator
  • District staff/faculty member (4)
  • ICEA appointed teacher
  • ICEA appointed associate
  • Facilities Management employee
  • Secretary employee
  • Community member
  • Parent
  • DPO President
  • School Board Member
  • Student

3. Screening committee identified criteria for name selection, for example: 

  • Famous American (H. Hoover)
  • Well-known Iowa City resident (B. Shimek)
  • Person who is/was known to foster education (H. Lemme)

4.  Screening committee reviews suggested names

  • Buildings shall not be named after living individuals
  • Identify characteristics of the individual that support naming a school after them
  • Select the name of consensus

5.  Screening committee recommends name to Board

6.  Board approves recommendation and announces the name at a public meeting.
