The Iowa City Community School District serves over 14,000 students and is the 4th largest school district in the state of Iowa. The District covers roughly 133 square miles with 17 preschool sites, 21 elementary schools, 3 junior high schools, 3 comprehensive high schools, 1 alternative high school, 1 online school, and our Transition Services Center, a program for special education students ages 18-21. Our high schools rank among the best in the state, and our ACT test scores sit well above the state and national averages. We aim to create an exemplary school district that is acknowledged for the caliber of our graduates, the quality of our staff, and the excellence of our programs.
Superintendent's Message
-
When people think about our schools, words like traditional and established come to mind, but also responsive, innovative, creative, inclusive, and progressive. For more than one hundred years, the Iowa City Community School District has been the instructional leader in eastern Iowa, across the state, and throughout the nation.
What makes the Iowa City Community School District so special? Talented and dedicated staff is the foundation of our success. Walking through the halls of our schools, you will notice the pride our employees take in their work. Everything we do is focused on providing the finest educational opportunities for the children of our community. Expectations are high — for students and employees — and it shows time and time again in the recognition of our people and programs.
Our community sets a high priority on the education of its youth. Strong, open communication and efficient use of tax dollars are cornerstones of citizen support for the District’s educational programs. Community partnership and input into our planning are key components of our schools’ success.
There are many ways to measure the quality of education in a community. We feel confident that you will find that quality is the hallmark in each of our schools. When you visit our classrooms, you will see firsthand what educational excellence is all about in the Iowa City Community School District.

Brennan Swayzer
Tate High
Brennan Swayzer
Engagement & Intervention Strategist
Tate High School"Brennan goes above and beyond his job expectations on a daily basis. He strives to have high expectations for all our students while also having high expectations for himself. Brennan never shows frustration and his patience with our students is evident in how he carries himself daily.
He is always willing to take on whatever task is needed. Whether it is to help support our Out-of-School Suspension program, our SPACE, our hallways, our bathrooms, help with lunch supervision, be a mentor, complete check-ins with students, do home visits, help with getting students to school, or anything to make our students successful.
Brennan has been in the district for several years. First at City High School and then at Tate High this year. I cannot speak highly enough about the difference he has made with our students, our team, and our program. He is a team player, he is dependable, and he is a great mentor."

Kim Cranston
Liberty High
Kim Cranston
Special Education Strategist
Liberty High School"Kim Cranston and her team have gone above and beyond for my son. Kim would investigate and implement a multitude of approaches to help our son lessen his behaviors so he could focus more on learning.
Because of the team's hard work, our son is more involved in the school programs and is engaging with other students and staff at school. He is so happy! He is like a changed person; it has not only been seen at school but it has also changed our lives at home. The dedication and caring of Kim and her team are beyond appreciated."

Lisa Heying
Horn Elementary
Lisa Heying
Instructional Design Strategist
Horn Elementary" As a teacher for a year and a half, Lisa supported me at Horn Elementary. She never let me doubt myself, on days I felt like I had no idea what I was doing she spent hours with me helping me find interventions and supports for students. She helped in any way she could - We were short a sub. Lisa stepped in! We needed support with behavior in our classroom. Lisa stepped in!
Lisa fills so many roles at Horn Elementary School above being an IDS. My love for being a teacher is because of Lisa. She never gave up on me as a student or as a teacher. She has given to ICCSD for 32 years!"
"Lisa has worked for the district for over 32 years! Throughout her career, she has worked with too many students and teachers to count! She has always put the needs of students first and helped teachers grow not only professionally but personally. Her impact is unmeasurable and she has been instrumental in making Horn not only a great place to work and learn but a place that feels like a second home."

Meghan Meyer
Grant Elementary
Meghan Meyer
Academic Support Teacher
Grant Elementary"My son looks up to Mrs. Meyer and speaks highly of her on a daily basis. This has motivated him to put forth his best effort in both academics and behavior. Teaching is an extremely demanding profession and teachers have a lot to juggle. Mrs. Meyer keeps the focus on kids. It is evident to me that she genuinely cares about each and every student in her classroom and takes the time to really get to know them. My son knows Mrs. Meyer cares about him and, in turn, his interest in learning has grown exponentially. The root of his newfound passion for learning and love of school is a teacher that cares about the whole child and sees their potential.
All students deserve to have an educator like Mrs. Meyer who recognizes their strengths, sets them up for success, and cares deeply about them."
