Decision Announced for the Future of the Former Hills Elementary School

front of hills elementary

The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) and the City of Hills have collaborated on the next steps regarding the recently closed Hills Elementary School. After extensive discussions and evaluations, both parties concluded that demolition of the building is the most practical option, given that the City of Hills has determined that the building, in its current layout, does not meet the City’s needs.

The decision was made after careful consideration of various factors, including potential uses for the building, costs associated with maintenance and renovation, and the long-term vision for the site. Both the ICCSD and the City of Hills are committed to ensuring that the land will be utilized in a manner that benefits the community.

"While it is always difficult to say goodbye to a building that holds many memories, we believe this decision is the best way forward for our community," said Hills Mayor Tim Kemp. "We look forward to exploring future opportunities for the site that will serve the needs of our residents."

Superintendent Matt Degner of the Iowa City Community School District expressed his support for the decision, stating, "After thorough discussions with the City of Hills, we agree that demolishing the former Hills Elementary School is the most practical and beneficial choice. We appreciate the City's partnership and are committed to working together on the next steps."

The demolition process is expected to begin in the coming months, with efforts to minimize disruption to the surrounding area. Additional information will be made available as details are finalized.
