Update on 8th-Grade Participation in High School Athletics

North Central football player running the ball

We want to provide an update regarding the State of Iowa’s recent passage of House File 2591 (HF2591), which allows eligible 8th-grade students to participate in high school athletics under certain circumstances.

The Iowa City Community School District is actively reviewing the new legislation and working to understand how it will be implemented. Our athletic directors, building administrators, and district leaders are collaborating to develop procedures that align with the new law while supporting the best interests of our student-athletes and our athletic programs. Once developed, these updated policies and procedures will be presented to the Board of Education for review and approval.

We understand there is significant interest from students, families, and coaches as they prepare for upcoming athletic seasons. We appreciate your patience as we work through this process thoughtfully and in accordance with state requirements.

As state agencies continue to provide guidance, we encourage families to review the legislation and the resources available below:

We will share additional information with families as soon as district guidance and procedures have been finalized.
