Healthy Kids will not deny service on the basis of insurance; however part of our goal is to work collaboratively with area medical providers to provide care for your child. 

There are options online for where to apply for public aid and you can also apply for presumptive (temporary) Medicaid with certified staff at the Johnson County Public Health (JCPH) department. Individuals and families can apply at the Department of Human Services located in the Johnson County Public Health and Human Services building at 855 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City, IA 52245.

In addition, each school in the Iowa City Community School District has a designated Student & Family Advocate (SFA) who can assist with referrals and the help walk along side families in the application process. Find your Student and Family Advocate.

The preference is that a child is accompanied by an adult however we do understand that this isn't always possible. If you cannot be present for the appointment, we will need all consent forms filled out before the appointment time and the responsible adult will have to be available by phone to answer any clarification or follow-up questions.

Healthy Kids utilizes a program called Vaccines for Children (VFC), which are state-funded vaccines. We are able to vaccinate ICCSD students who are uninsured, underinsured, Native-American, or TXIX/Medicaid eligible. If you have a regular medical care provider, please be sure to discuss the required vaccinations for school entry with them.

Children with insurance should schedule an appointment with your primary care provider. If your child does not have a care provider, see list of local care providers in the area. 

Children who are uninsured, ineligible for health insurance, or facing other barriers can schedule a physical exam at Healthy Kids Clinic.

Johnson County Public Health's I-Smile program ensures children have a dental home. The program serves children from 0 to 21 years of age, and pregnant women. Please call (319) 356-6045 Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Services provided by a registered dental hygienist may include:

• Dental screening
• Oral hygiene instruction
• Fluoride varnish application
• Referral to local dentists for treatment
• Gap filling preventive dental treatment
• Dental care coordination

If you need help finding dental care, the I-Smile Coordinator provides assistance to families in finding a dental provider. Please call Becky Hackett-Leas, Oral Health Coordinator, at (319) 688-5906 or email rhackett@johnsoncountyiowa.gov. Services provided include:

• Review of family financial resources
• Determination of barriers to dental care
• Referral to a dentist
• Assistance in applying for Medicaid, hawk-i, Title X and Title V programs
• Follow-up with families to ensure dental visits are kept

For children with Medicaid, you may be able to get no-cost rides to your non-emergency doctor appointments. To set up a ride, call Access2Care, 1-833-404-1061 and press 2 for Iowa Total Care Member Services, then press 1 for Transportation. Set up rides at least 2 working days before an appointment. Children 16+ do not require a parent and guardian to be present.

Children who are uninsured and ineligible for insurance can contact Healthy Kids Clinic to schedule an appointment and to make transportation arrangements.
