Iowa City Community School District
LGBTQ Supports
Our district is committed to creating safe, supportive, and welcoming schools for all students. We recognize that LGBTQ students, like all young people, thrive when they feel respected, included, and connected to their school community. While we remain mindful of Iowa laws regarding curriculum and instruction, there are many ways we continue to provide care and support:
- Student-Led Groups – LGBTQ student clubs, such as GSAs, are supported and recognized in the same way as other non-curricular clubs. These groups provide safe spaces for students to build community and leadership.
- Bullying & Harassment Prevention – Students have access to confidential and anonymous reporting systems to ensure concerns are addressed quickly and fairly.
- Mental Health Support – School counselors and student support staff are available to assist students with their overall well-being, including access to additional resources if needed.
- Professional Learning for Staff – Staff receive ongoing training on creating respectful, supportive classrooms where all students feel valued.
- Family & Community Connections – We work closely with local organizations that offer resources for LGBTQ students and their families.
Our goal is simple: to ensure that every student feels safe, respected, and ready to learn.
