What is School Counseling?

We're proud to offer a comprehensive K-12 school counseling program designed to foster personal, social, educational, and career development.

Our counselors collaborate with students, school staff, parents, and the community to create a positive school environment and deliver programs that support students in these critical areas.

We firmly believe that every student should have access to activities and instruction that promote their optimal development. The school counseling program is an essential component of the educational process, and it's inclusive of each and every student.

In our Elementary School Counseling Program, we integrate education, prevention, and intervention activities into every facet of a student's school journey. Our curriculum, rooted in research and tailored to different developmental stages, emphasizes the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required for academic, career, and social-emotional growth – all of which lay the foundation for future success.

At the secondary level, students and families find valuable support through counselor advocacy and collaborative efforts with school staff. Our counselors play a pivotal role in ensuring both academic and personal success. To achieve this, we provide individualized support for every student. Each student is paired with a specific counselor who works with them throughout their secondary school experience.

We're here for you, every step of the way.

Mission
Statement

The mission of the Iowa City K-12 School Counseling department is to provide a developmental, comprehensive, and data-driven program that is accessible to each student and ensures opportunities for academic, career and social/emotional development.

Through implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program, school counselors promote equity and access for all students and make a significant impact on creating a school culture where student and family values, beliefs, cultural backgrounds, identities, and abilities are valued.

School counselors partner with students, families, district and building staff, and community partners, to advocate for and deliver systems that ensure students are treated with dignity and respect as unique individuals.
