Competitive debate is a program unlike anything else in high school. It confers a unique set of skills, through debates about a variety of topics, which expand a student's civic, language arts, and social studies education by building critical thinking, research, rhetorical, social, and time management skills.
We are 2020 Iowa State Champions and ended last season ranked third in the United States. We represented Iowa at the National tournament in June 2018 and qualified for the 2020 Nationals but opted not to attend.
In years before the pandemic our team would regularly travel to tournaments in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan, with the option of flying to other national competitions in Boston, Palm Beach/Miami, Atlanta, Harvard, Stanford, and New York City. Everything we do in debate this year will be online, which presents a whole lot of new opportunities for debating and learning new technology skills.
If you are academically minded and also competitive, debate is for you!
