Club Update, February 18, 2019

Greetings, NWJH Chess Club!

Thanks to Jacob, Joseph, and Sierra for representing NWJH at match play team state in Ankeny last week. They pulled up an elementary school player to fill a team of four and took third place.

There are a few other events I'd like to make you aware of:

  • Saturday, 2/23/2019 – Iowa High School and K-8 Championships (Barber/Denker), Iowa City, IA (Flyer attached.)

This is arguably the most competitive of the annual scholastic events, and it has slower time controls than most scholastic tournaments (G60/d5 instead of G30/d5). The top players don’t miss this one, as it comes with a ~$400 scholarship to represent Iowa at the Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions at the U.S. Open this summer in Orlando. I am in charge of organizing this event this year. Students of any ability are welcome, and there will be class prizes, but be prepared for slower, tougher games running into the evening. We will be downtown and within walking distance of many restaurants. Light concessions will be available.

  • Sat., 3/9/2019 – Iowa Individual-Play Team Championships, Cedar Rapids, IA

This is our main team event of the year. All of our players will play for the same team, and our top four scores will count for the standings.
  • Sat., 3/30/2019 – Iowa Girls Tournament of Champions Qualifier

This is a special, girls-only, K-12 event with the winner also receiving a ~$400 scholarship to attend the Girls Championship at the U.S. Open.  It’s a fun event for girls of all ages and abilities, regardless of whether contending for the title.
  • Sat., 4/13/2019 – Iowa K-12 Scholastic Open, and K-8, K-5, and K-3 Championships

I hope you are having a great year!
