COVID-19 Vaccine Information for Children Ages 12 and Over
Beginning May 13, 2021, children ages 12 and older are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine following the Food and Drug Administration’s authorization of the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use in this younger age group. This is the only COVID-19 vaccine available to children at this time. Through our partnership with Johnson County Public Health (JCPH), we are providing information to families on how eligible children can receive the vaccine. We would also like to provide resources for those who wish to learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine and children.
If you or your eligible family members would like to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, below are local resources for scheduling an appointment:
- UI Health Care Online Vaccine Scheduling: https://uihc.org/schedule-your-covid-19-vaccination
- Mercy Iowa City Family Practice: Call (319) 339-3520
- Towncrest Pharmacy: https://www.towncrest.com, or call (319) 337-3526
- Appointments may also be available through local CVS, Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, or Walgreens locations.
COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost; however, vaccine providers may charge an administration fee, which is covered by most insurance. For uninsured patients, this fee is covered by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provider Relief Fund.
For individuals seeking information about the COVID-19 vaccine, you may visit the JCPH, Mercy, or UI Health Care vaccine information websites. In addition, UI Health Care will host a Facebook Live Q&A with infectious disease specialist Melanie Wellington, MD on Friday, May 14, at noon. Visit www.facebook.com/uichildrens to watch the live Q&A and submit your questions. Specific information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and children can also be found here https://uichildrens.org/health-library/covid-19-vaccines-your-child.
