Honors Abound for West High Journalism Staff

NSPA names former WSS staffer as national Writer of the Year

National Scholastic Press Association named Anjali Huynh '19 as the first place national Writer of the Year at the Fall National High School Journalism Convention on Nov. 23 in Washington, D.C. Huynh is a former WSS managing editor and reporter.

13 WSS staffers recognized at national convention in D.C.

National Scholastic Press Association announced the 2019 winners of its Pacemaker Awards and Individual Awards on Nov. 23 at the Fall National High School Journalism Convention, in Washington, D.C.

NSPA recognized the 2018-2019 WSS staff as a Newspaper Pacemaker Finalist and the following students in the individual national award categories:

  • Second place Multimedia Sports Story of the Year: Will Conrad '19 and Deniz Ince '19
  • Second place Sports Story of the Year: Sophie Stephens '19
  • Third place Illustration of the Year: Crystal Kim '19
  • Fourth place Marketer of the Year: Thomas Duong '19
  • Fifth place Social Justice Reporting: Huynh and Jessica Moonjely '20

The following students received Honorable Mention in the individual national award categories:

  • Comic Strip Panel: Brenda Gao '21
  • Newsmagazine Page/Spread: Amy Liao '21
  • Multimedia Feature: Kristina Rosebrook '19 and Stephens
