2nd Trimester Choir Information for Parents
Good afternoon, choirs and parents!
2nd Trimester choir has begun, and we are now preparing for our February 11th concert!!! Please mark this date IN RED in your calendar now! Please remember that concert attendance is required for all singers, and missing a concert can seriously bring down your choir grade. Concerts should not be missed unless due to emergencies, or unavoidable extenuating circumstances.
Below, I have included a copy of the Choir Syllabus, which can also be found on Canvas. Parents, if you have never read through the Choir Syllabus before, please do so now and let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you, and here's to a great term!
South East Choirs Syllabus
The purpose of Choir is to introduce the basic fundamentals of good singing. This includes posture, proper breathing technique, and tone quality. During the course of the year, students should expect to become better musicians. This includes expanding musical vocabulary, knowledge of different styles of music, ability to read through a musical score, as well as some music history. As a group, the choir will learn how to effectively work together to produce two-part and three-part harmony. This includes listening to each other and respecting one another.
Choir is a performance-based class and will be letter graded as follows:
- 50% Daily Participation
- 40% Required Performance
- 10% Assessments
Each student will be able to earn 10 points for each week of class. Points can be earned by demonstrating good posture, singing, and demonstrating on-task behaviors. If there is a valid reason you are unable to participate with your voice, please bring a note from a parent or guardian. You will still be expected to sit in on the rehearsal, take notes, and listen silently. Our major emphasis is on vocal development, music comprehension, and the study of a variety of choral repertoire.
SEJH Choirs are performance-based courses, so concert attendance is mandatory. Concerts are the equivalent of a “Final Exam” each trimester, and are worth 40% of your grade. Parents and students need to pay special attention to the concert dates and plan activities around them. These dates are set well in advance of the school year and missing a concert can affect the entire ensemble. Only extenuating circumstances will be considered for missing a trimester concert when notification is given to Mr. Debes in advance. An individual singing evaluation will be required to earn any credit.
- Be Respectful. Show respect for everyone in the room and their belongings.
- No food, drink, or gum during rehearsal. Only bottled water is acceptable.
- Cell phones are expected to be turned off and put away once class begins.
- Tuesday, February 11
- Tuesday, May 12
All concerts will be at City High’s Opstad Auditorium beginning at 7:30pm. (Students may be expected to arrive as early as 6:00. Keep a close eye out for Call Time announcements closer to concert dates.)
- $2 for adults, $1 for students, Free for children 5 and under
- Performers do not pay
- Concert tickets available for purchase at the door of every concert
- Family Pass – For $20, you will receive two passes that will admit your entire family to all curricular concert events in the Iowa City Community School District.
All students are expected to provide their own clothing to wear at each concert. Everyone is required to wear formal clothes--a white top, and black bottoms. For example, a white shirt with sleeves (button-up dress shirt or blouse) and black pants or skirt and black shoes and socks. If you choose to wear a skirt, you are required to wear black opaque tights or leggings underneath the skirt.
