USDA Rural Development State Director Greenfield Visits Field to Family Food Hub to Highlight Improved Access to Healthy Foods

Non-Profit Food Hub Received $200,000 in USDA Funding in June 

Iowa City, Iowa–Sept. 15, 2022–U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director in Iowa Theresa Greenfield today met with the leadership of Field to Family, a nonprofit local food hub in Iowa City, to highlight how the Agency is helping increase equitable access to healthy food.

In June, the food hub received a $200,000 grant through USDA’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative, a program which helps bring grocery stores and other healthy food retailers to underserved urban and rural communities. Field to Family received the grant to help with soft costs and infrastructure improvements to upgrade and expand current operations.  

“USDA is committed to creating steady, stable food supply chains in rural communities,” said Director Greenfield. “The Biden-Harris Administration wants to ensure that everyone—regardless of where they live—has affordable access healthy food. This expansion of food options in our rural hometowns provides new market opportunities for farmers and creates jobs for Iowans.”  

USDA partnered with the Reinvestment Fund to make the investment. The Reinvestment Fund serves as the National Fund Manager for USDA. It raises capital; provides financial and technical assistance to regional, state and local partnerships; and helps fund projects to improve access to fresh, healthy foods in underserved areas.
