The District is set to begin work on the prairie establishment project planned at Weber Elementary School. The project will convert an estimated 4.8 acres of turf-type grass over to a native shortgrass prairie mix. This will include the open green space north and east of the Weber athletic fields. Please reference this map for specific locations.
The prairie establishment project is part of the District’s Climate Action Plan and will aid in reducing greenhouse gases. In addition, the project will create more outdoor educational opportunities for students and increase the native habitat to attract more wildlife. Currently, the green space is not being used by the school.
The District’s grounds team will complete the work in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), and the City of Iowa City on design, plant selection, and establishment of the prairie. The project will begin on May 17, 2021, and continue for the entire 2021 growing season. The full establishment of the prairie will require three to five years with regular grounds care throughout the process.
If you have any questions regarding the Weber prairie establishment project, please contact the District’s Facilities Management Office at (319) 688-1020.
