New Start Date and Return-to-Learn Update (8/5/20)

On behalf of the entire Iowa City Community School District staff and Board of Directors, please know that we continue to put the health and safety of our students, staff, and families first in our decision-making.  We thank you for your continued support and patience as we navigate this very fluid situation.

On Tuesday, August 4, 2020, the Iowa City Community School District’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to delay the start date of the 2020-21 school year.  The first day of school for all learning models will now be Tuesday, September 8, 2020.  The updated school calendar details the new start and end dates, as well as other key dates, for the 2020-21 school year.  Last night’s presentation to the Board, which includes the data from the recent school start date survey, can be found on our Return-to-Learn website.

As outlined in the presentation, we have submitted our application to the Iowa Department of Education for permission to begin the year in an off-site learning model. We are awaiting the determination of the application and we will share updates with our school district community as soon as information is received.

As a reminder, registration is now open.  Information on the registration process can be found on the Registration and Enrollment section of our website.  All families must register their child(ren) in PowerSchool through a process called e-Registration.  During the e-Registration process, families will have an opportunity to choose between the following:

  • Option A: Enroll the student, as normal, in a standard class section.  This section would follow our Continuum of Learning Models and may meet on-site, in a hybrid scenario (partially on-site, partially off-site), in a remote continuous learning scenario (off-site), or any combination of these throughout the year, depending upon current state guidance and local health conditions.

  • Option B: Enroll the student in the ICCSD PK-12 Online Learning Program, which will enroll the student in online coursework for the year.  The deadline to enroll in the ICCSD PK-12 Online Learning Program has been extended to Sunday, August 16, 2020, given the new school start date.

Beginning on August 10, special education teachers will begin the process of scheduling Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings for students with IEPs to design a Remote Learning Plan. Consistent tools will be used to guide IEP teams to design supports for students. The goal of the Remote Learning Plan is to ensure the student continues to receive a free and appropriate public education regardless of the learning model being implemented. As always, parents/guardians will be included as part of the IEP team.

We appreciate the feedback that we have received from students, parents, and staff throughout our planning and preparation for the upcoming school year.  Open dialog with our community helps to ensure that we are meeting the needs of those at the center of our focus. We are in this together and we cannot wait to safely welcome our students and staff back into our buildings.  #ICCSDtogether
