Alison Demory Nutrition Services Director Iowa City Community School District
"When the pandemic reached Eastern Iowa in March, it became immediately apparent that one of its major impacts would be to exacerbate issues surrounding food insecurity in our community. For some students, school is the only reliable and consistent source of meals and, when schools close, access to food is limited or disappears. Recognizing this problem, Alison worked to implement a food distribution system that reimagined the typical school breakfast and lunch into grab and go meals that individuals could pick-up curbside in a safe and convenient manner. She continued this work into the summer and fall and now the school district has distributed more than 500,000 meals to the community - which has made such an incredible impact and fed so many kids who otherwise may have missed a meal. She has demonstrated a commitment to the children in our district and has gone above and beyond to make sure that children have access to a basic need: food."
