Stakeholder Survey and Public Forums
School discipline policies and practices are essential in creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. While we have always strived to create this environment, our data shows we have more work to do, specifically regarding racial inequities in some students’ school experiences with regard to safety and discipline, suspensions, and office referrals. In listening to our community, we recognize and embrace the need to revise our discipline policies to promote better experience and outcomes for students, educators, and families. We thank the Iowa Freedom Riders, Black Voices Project, ICCSD Equity Advisory Committee, and others that have been advocates and partners so far in this work.
Over the next several months, the District is committed to engaging in a comprehensive assessment of their student behavior policies and practices and discipline policies and practices (DPP). To achieve these goals, the District will use an engaged, data- and research-informed process facilitated by the Equity Implemented Partnership with the University of Iowa. As part of this process, we have convened a PBIS and Rethinking School Discipline Working Group to assist in the updating of the discipline and behavior policies and practices. The Work Group includes representatives from key stakeholder groups including the Board of Education, District Leadership Team, Equity Department, elementary and secondary principals, teachers and staff, parents, students, the Equity Advisory Committee, and community members.
The Work Group will review existing District data, assess the current policy language and implementation guidelines, and review relevant academic and education policy research on discipline. The group will review information, themes, and feedback that emerges from listening sessions convened with key stakeholder groups, public input received through two open community forums, and survey responses. The outcomes desired from this process are updated discipline policies and guidance documents and broader implementation of PBIS strategies. The revised policies and practices will be completed by April 2021 and ready for implementation beginning fall 2021.
