Securly 24
In 2018, our Board directed the administrative team to create a safety committee. The goal of the committee was to conduct research and make recommendations back to the Board on safety measures to be implemented across our District. Care Assessment was one of those recommendations.
Care Assessment is a program to prevent violence and resolve conflicts proactively. The goal is early detection and attention to problems such as bullying, harassment, teasing, and conflict before it escalates into violent behavior. This is accomplished through staff observation, student reporting, and the Say Something incident reporting tool. In addition to these methods, our District implemented the Securly 24 monitoring tool for District technology devices.
Our District has used Securly's content filtering service to block access to inappropriate websites and material on school-owned devices since 2017. At the end of 2021, the district implemented the Securly 24 service, which alerts the district when they detect activity such as searches, sites visited, or emails sent and received that indicate a student may be considering self-harm and harming others. The goal of this monitoring is to provide early notification of concerns so that families and schools can work together to provide intervention and support in an effort to circumvent violence and harm to oneself.
What Does Securly 24 Do?
Securly 24 sends emails and makes calls when online activity reaches a concerning threshold. School administrative staff are notified of extreme risk situations when there is an imminent threat of harm to oneself or others. These concerns are addressed immediately and parents are contacted right away.
Securly 24 will also flag activity that is at a moderate risk and increased moderate risk. Securly 24 defines these concerns as serious but not imminent. Securly 24 staff notifies school staff of these concerns through email. These concerns are expected to be addressed within 24 hours or the next working day. Securly 24 continues to actively monitor the activity in the event it elevates to extreme risk.
Securly 24 contacts building personnel by phone only during operational hours of school (8:30 AM - 4:00 PM). During non-operational hours and on weekends, extreme risk calls will be directed to emergency services. For more information on definitions of extreme risk, increased moderate risk, and moderate risk, see 24 Alert Risk Assessment.
During school breaks (winter break, spring break, summer break, etc.), Securly 24 will continue to monitor only cases of extreme risk. If an extreme risk is flagged, Securly 24 will call emergency services, who will respond by conducting a welfare check with the family.
